The Boy Wit Da Toy is an original painting by Minneapolis-based artist, Brit Sigh.

This painting is rooted in a personal memory from when the artist was 11 years old. He was playing behind the apartment complex across the street from his house with a neon green and orange toy dart gun when two police officers came around the corner with their guns drawn.

One of them pointed his gun directly at him from about 10 feet away. All he could see was down the barrel.

After a few moments, the officer started repeating, “It’s just a toy.”

The police had been called by an old white woman in the apartment complex who always stared at him from the third-floor window and reported that there was a Black guy with a gun behind the building.

He was just a kid.

That memory stayed with him.

In this painting, Marcus — a recurring figure in Brit Sigh’s work — is holding the toy gun in perfect SUL position: controlled, careful, and non-threatening. But that is part of the point. For Black kids, even caution does not always protect them from being seen as dangerous.

The Boy Wit Da Toy explores the moment childhood collides with perception. It reflects on the vulnerability of Black boyhood, the loss of innocence, and the reality of being treated like a threat before being allowed to simply be a kid.

Executed in acrylic on canvas, this piece continues Brit Sigh’s exploration of imagination, vulnerability, and the complicated realities of growing up Black in America.
