Still Becoming captures Marcus in a moment between where he has been and wherever he is going next. Grounded on his knees with his butterfly wings behind him, he turns his face toward the sky, a star still shining in his eye.

The painting is about transformation that is still in progress—the space between who we were and who we are becoming. But “still” carries another meaning, too.

Still dreaming.
Still hoping.
Still becoming.

Through Marcus, the work celebrates Black childhood, imagination, hope, and the freedom to grow into something not yet fully known.
